Resistor color code

Most of the time resistors will be the four band type. The first two bands will be numbers and the third band will be how many zeros are added. For example 4 is yellow, 7 is violet and orange is 3, so that would be 47,000 or 47K. For the five band type, the first three bands will be numbers and the fourth band is the multiplier, or how many zeros are added. For example 5 is green, 1 is brown, 0 is black and red is 2 so that would be 51,000 or 51K. The last color band is the tolerance band. So, if you have a 100 ohm resistor with a one percent tolerance, the actual measured value could be between 99 and 101 ohms. If that 100 ohm resistor had a 10 percent tolerance it could measure between 90 and 110 ohms.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Capacitor conversion chart

Capacitor conversion is just a matter of moving the decimal point. To convert a pF capacitor, move the decimal point to the left. To convert a uF capacitor, move the decimal point to the right. The nF is three decimal points from the left and 3 decimal points from the right.

Paper and electrolytic capacitors are usually expressed in terms of uF (microfarads). Short forms for microfarad include uF, mfd, MFD, MF and UF. Mica capacitors are usually expressed in terms of pF (picofarads) (micromicrofarads). Short forms for micromicrofarads include pF, mmfd, MMFD, MMF, uuF and PF. A pF is one-millionth of a uF. In between a pF and a uF is an nF, which is one-one thousands of a uF. Converting back and forth between uF, nF and pF can be confusing with all those darn decimal points to worry about. Below is a uF - nF- pF conversion chart. Just print a copy and tape it to your workbench, it will come in handy.

To use this chart, just read across. For example, 1uF is the same as 1,000nF or 1,000,000pF. The first three columns are different names for the same thing. The fourth, fifth and sixth columns are again different names for the same thing.
